The decision in brief

Start with what is going in the bag, not the number printed on it.

A 1 tonne FIBC and a 1.5 tonne FIBC can both be appropriate for the same operation, but they solve different combinations of material weight, fill volume, site handling and discharge requirements. The correct selection starts with the actual material, its condition and the way it will be filled, lifted, stored and emptied.

For example, a 90 × 90 × 120 cm bag offers a different internal volume from a 90 × 90 × 90 cm format. That does not tell you the final load weight on its own. Bulk density, moisture, particle size, compaction and fill method all affect the mass in a given volume. A bag must never be loaded above its marked safe working load, even if there appears to be physical space remaining.

The safety point that matters

Safe working load and safety factor are related, but they are not the same thing.

Safe working load, or SWL, is the maximum load the FIBC is designed to carry in service when used as specified. A 1 tonne bag is not a 1.5 tonne bag with spare capacity, and a 1.5 tonne bag is not a licence to estimate load weight.

A 5:1 safety factor refers to the relationship used in performance testing. It does not permit loading the bag to five times its SWL. Pacific Packaging's 5:1 products described as single-trip should be used for their intended single-trip application, and should not be assumed suitable for reuse.

Before you lift

Use the bag label and site procedure.

Read the manufacturer's marking and handling instructions. Do not exceed the marked SWL under any circumstances. Use handling equipment and fork spacing appropriate to the lifting loops. Keep people clear of a suspended load and follow your workplace lifting procedures. Do not assume a single-trip FIBC can be reused.

What separates a 1 tonne selection from a 1.5 tonne selection?

Often suitable where the intended product weight and process sit comfortably within a 1,000 kg SWL.

A 1 tonne rating can be a practical choice for many dry bulk materials, particularly where the operator has a controlled fill routine, known product characteristics and no need to use a larger load rating. The bag's top and bottom construction should still suit the actual filling and emptying process.

Check: A taller or larger-looking bag does not automatically mean it is appropriate for a heavier material.

1.5 tonne FIBC

Appropriate only where the material, bag specification and handling system are all selected for a 1,500 kg SWL.

A 1.5 tonne format may suit operations that need a higher rated load and can safely fill, lift, store and transport that load. It also requires a practical check of the handling equipment, clearance, pallet or storage position, and the complete workflow around the filled bag.

Check: Increased SWL is not a substitute for confirming material weight and safe handling conditions.

Before standardising a format, test filling, lifting, storage and discharge with the actual material and normal site procedure.

Can a 1 tonne bulk bag hold 1 cubic metre of material?

A cubic metre is a volume, while a tonne is a weight. The final weight in a bag of a given volume depends on the material's bulk density and condition. Confirm your actual material rather than treating volume and tonne rating as interchangeable.

Does a 5:1 safety factor mean I can load a bag to five times its SWL?

No. The safety factor relates to testing, not permitted service load. The bag must never be loaded above its marked SWL.

Should I buy a 1.5 tonne bag just to have a larger safety margin?
