Use baffles to manage shape, then specify the bag around the material and handling system.

Baffle panels are internal fabric panels that help a filled flexible intermediate bulk container retain a squarer profile. That can make a real difference where pallet footprint, racking clearances, stacking presentation or container loading are part of the operational problem. It does not replace the need to select the right Safe Working Load, filling system, discharge arrangement or lifting method.

Prioritise pallet geometry

Start with the usable pallet footprint and the space around it, rather than selecting from nominal bag volume alone. A squarer filled profile is useful only if it fits the way your operation stores and moves product.

Confirm the material flow

Spout-top and spout-bottom designs are intended for controlled filling and discharge of suitable free-flowing material. Confirm the product's flow behaviour and the connection to your filling and emptying equipment.

Specify safe handling

Match the bag's stated SWL, loop arrangement and trip rating to the complete lifting process. Equipment, fork spacing, travel conditions and the people handling the bag all remain part of the decision.

The important distinction

Internal baffles improve shape retention. They do not increase the bag’s Safe Working Load.

A 5:1 safety factor does not mean a bag can be loaded to five times its SWL. The SWL shown for the specific bag remains the maximum working load. Pacific Packaging Australia’s baffle products featured here are specified as single-trip FIBCs, so a used bag must not be treated as automatically suitable for reuse.

Inspect the bag, seams and lifting loops before use. Lift with all four loops simultaneously using rated equipment, and follow the product instructions and site procedures.

What baffles do in practice

Reduce bulging at the corners, so the filled bag uses its space more predictably.

Conventional FIBCs can round outward as they are filled. In a baffle design, internal panels support the sides and help guide the contents into a more cubic shape. The benefit is operational, not cosmetic, a more consistent footprint can simplify the conversation between filling point, pallet, storage location and freight plan.

That is particularly useful when several filled bags are being staged together or when a site needs a clearer, more repeatable storage layout. It can also support more efficient use of container and warehouse space, provided the completed load is still assessed for safe placement, access and stability.

Selecting bag height

Choose the vertical format around your real clearance, not a target fill weight.

The 140 cm, 160 cm, 180 cm and 200 cm formats above share the same 105 × 105 cm internal base, but the height affects where the filled bag can be used. Taller bags may suit a process that needs greater vertical volume, while a shorter format can be easier to accommodate below equipment, within a storage bay or under a lifting attachment. Neither is automatically the better choice.

Start by mapping the practical envelope. Measure the pallet, bag height at the intended fill level, top-spout clearance, loop free height, forklift or hoist attachment, doorways and the final storage position. Then allow for the fact that the finished profile depends on the actual material and filling conditions. A paper calculation is useful, but it should be followed by a controlled test fill.

For multi-stage operations, include every transition. A bag that clears the filling point but does not fit the staging bay, discharge frame or transport loading arrangement will interrupt the workflow later, when the product is already in the bag.

A baffle bag is part of a system. A good procurement brief gives the supplier and the site team enough detail to test suitability before the bag arrives at the filling station.

  • Material: confirm the product is dry and free-flowing enough for the proposed filling and discharge arrangement.
  • Fill: check the spout dimensions, attachment method and required clearance at the filling point.
  • Storage: verify the filled bag height, usable pallet footprint, aisle access and any racking limitations.
  • Lift: confirm the lifting equipment is rated and configured for the actual bag, including use of all four lifting loops.
  • Discharge: establish how the bottom spout will be accessed, controlled and re-secured during the process.
  • Transport: plan how completed bags will be restrained and handled in line with your freight and site requirements.

A taller bag does not establish how much mass it can safely carry. The material's density and the bag's stated SWL must be considered separately.

Baffles help control the filled shape. They do not authorise a higher load, change the trip rating or remove the need for sound lifting practices.

Skipping the equipment check

Top and bottom spouts need to work with the actual filling and discharge points. Confirm diameter, access, closure steps and clearance before the first delivery.

Assuming reuse is permitted

Single-trip FIBCs are not multi-trip bags. A bag appearing intact does not change the product’s intended trip rating.
