How to hand-wrap pallets for more consistent load containment
A practical guide for warehouse teams choosing hand stretch film and building a repeatable wrapping process for storage and dispatch. Start with a stable pallet, wrap the load to the pallet, then confirm the finished unit is suitable for its handling and transport plan.
The short version
Good hand wrapping starts before the roll is opened.
Stretch film works most effectively when it is part of a disciplined packing routine. The pallet needs to be sound, the stack needs to be stable and the film needs to connect the load to the pallet instead of simply covering the outer cartons.
Build a stable base
Keep cartons square, heavy items low and the load within the pallet footprint where practical.
Match film to the job
Consider load weight, edges, handling frequency, visibility needs and the way your team applies the film.

A critical distinction
Stretch film can unitise a pallet. It is not a substitute for a transport restraint system.

Before you wrap
Assess the load profile, not just the carton count.
A compact, evenly stacked pallet and a tall mixed-carton pallet can need very different treatment even when their overall weight is similar. Check the things that can make a pallet harder to contain: overhang, soft cartons, voids, sharp edges, loose top layers, uneven weight distribution and product that can settle in transit.
- Pallet condition: reject damaged boards, protruding fasteners and unstable bases.
- Stack geometry: square up cartons and reduce overhang before wrapping.
- Edge risk: identify corners or protrusions that could puncture film.
- Handling path: consider forklift movements, storage time and transfers.
Choose the working format
Use film selection to solve a specific operational need.
Micron is one useful part of the specification, but not the only one. Make the choice around the actual load, application method and outcome you need, then validate it with a controlled trial on representative pallets.
Everyday clear hand film
Useful where labels, barcodes and carton identification need to remain visible after wrapping. Check that the containment result is right for your normal load mix.
More robust clear film
Consider a stronger film specification where load weight, edge conditions or puncture risk call for more durability, after a real on-floor trial.
Black film
Useful where an opaque outer layer is required for product concealment or load identification. Confirm the film remains suitable for your handling and storage conditions.
The wrapping routine
Use a repeatable sequence your team can inspect.
The objective is controlled containment, not a decorative finish. Keep the process simple enough to train, observe and repeat across shifts.
Anchor at the base
Start low and include the pallet base so the load is connected to the pallet. Keep the roll under controlled tension without snapping the film.
Build overlapping passes
Work upward with consistent overlap. Give the middle of the pallet adequate attention, especially where stacked cartons can move independently.
Finish the top layer
Stabilise the upper cartons, then tear or cut the film cleanly and press the tail into the wrapped surface so it does not unravel during handling.
Train to an outcome, not a fixed number of revolutions.
A single turns-per-pallet rule can be misleading because pallet height, carton friction, load shape and film performance vary. Define an approved wrapping pattern for each common load family, test it and review it when the product, pallet or transport conditions change.
Inspection before handover
Make the final check part of the dispatch process.
Does the pallet look unitised?
Look for loose corners, separated layers, film tails, overhang and evidence that cartons can shift independently.
Can it be handled as planned?
Check the footprint, height and condition against the intended forklift, racking and vehicle-loading process.
What still needs to happen?
Apply the relevant restraint, blocking, containment, labelling and transport checks required by your operating plan.

How much stretch film should I use on a pallet?
There is no reliable one-size rule. Use enough controlled, overlapping passes to unitise the actual load, then validate the result through the handling and transport conditions that pallet will experience.
Is a thicker film always the right answer for a heavier pallet?
Not automatically. Film thickness is one consideration, alongside load shape, sharp edges, film performance, pallet build and application technique. Test the combination on a representative pallet rather than selecting on micron alone.
Can stretch film replace straps or other vehicle restraint?
No. Stretch film can help unitise palletised goods. Road transport restraint needs to be determined as part of the complete load restraint system for the load and vehicle.
Should I use clear or black hand film?
Clear film is useful where labels and product visibility matter. Black film can suit operations needing an opaque outer layer. Select the format that supports the operational outcome, then confirm performance on a real trial.
