Hand Pallet Wrapping Checklist: Before, During and After
Warehouse and dispatch checklist
A consistent wrap starts with a consistent routine.
Use this checklist to review the pallet, select the film and check the finished unit before handover. It gives warehouse teams a practical starting point for a documented wrapping routine.
Start with the load you actually handle
Two pallets can use the same film and still need different wrapping patterns. Stack shape, carton condition, load weight and the handling route all matter. Start with a representative pallet, then confirm the film and application method through a controlled trial.
Use the checks below alongside your workplace procedures, the film supplier’s instructions and your loading plan. Record the approved method so operators have a clear reference across shifts.
Check the pallet and stack
- Pallet condition: check for broken boards, protruding fasteners and an unstable base.
- Stack shape: look for overhang, gaps, leaning cartons and loose upper layers.
- Product condition: identify crushed cartons or packaging that could collapse as the load settles.
- Edges: identify corners or protrusions that could puncture the film.
- Handling route: consider the movements, storage and transfers the pallet will experience.
Correct the stack first
Extra film is not a reliable fix for an unstable pallet build. Resolve the packing problem before starting the wrapping trial.
Compare the complete specification
Choose film around the load and how it will be applied. Micron describes thickness, but it does not establish a pallet load rating on its own. Review width, roll length, film performance, visibility requirements and carton quantity together.
- Clear film: consider it where labels, barcodes and packed goods need to remain visible.
- Black film: consider it when an opaque outer layer is required to conceal the goods.
- Roll length: compare metres per roll as well as the carton price. A longer roll does not automatically mean a better result on your load.
- Application: confirm that the film is intended for hand use and that operators can apply it consistently.
Hand wrap options to compare
These are specifications to compare in your trial, not load-capacity recommendations. Confirm the complete pallet and wrapping method before adopting a film for routine use.
Apply a repeatable pattern
- Connect the load to the pallet. Include the pallet at the base, following your approved wrapping method.
- Work through the load consistently. Use the approved overlap and controlled tension, checking for gaps, tearing or sections that remain loose.
- Finish the upper layers. Follow the validated pattern for the load rather than treating every pallet as identical.
- Secure the film tail. Check that the finish will not unravel during the planned handling.
A fixed number of turns is not a universal specification. The required wrapping depends on factors including the goods’ weight and friction between the product layers and pallet. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and validate the result on representative loads.
Inspect the finished pallet
- Check for loose layers, leaning cartons, exposed edges and areas where the film has torn.
- Confirm the load is connected to the pallet and the film tail is secured.
- Check that required labels and handling information can be read.
- Confirm the pallet’s condition and dimensions suit its planned handling and storage.
- Complete the separate loading and transport-restraint checks required by the operating plan.
Wrapping and transport restraint are separate checks
Stretch film helps unitise goods, keeping smaller items together as one pack. The pack still needs an appropriate restraint system for the vehicle and journey. The NHVR’s unitising guidance explains why the unitising method and vehicle restraint must work together.
Keep a simple trial record
Record the load type, film specification, wrapping pattern and inspection outcome. Where useful, also record wrapping time and film used per pallet. Compare trials on similar loads so the results help your team make a practical purchasing decision.
Review the approved method when the product, pallet build, film or handling route changes. Keep the checklist close to the packing area so it is easy to use.
