How to Choose Carton Sealing Tape for Warehouse and Dispatch
Warehouse packing guide
Choose carton-sealing tape around the carton, conditions and packing method, not the roll alone.
A practical guide for Australian warehouse, dispatch and ecommerce teams comparing acrylic and hybrid adhesive tape, film gauge and consistent hand application.
Pacific Packaging Australia brand
A1 Tapes, practical formats for the packing bench.
A1 Tapes is Pacific Packaging Australia’s own tape brand. The range gives warehouse, ecommerce and dispatch teams practical options for carton sealing, hand application and specialist tape tasks.
Choose the format around your carton, application method and operating conditions, then create a repeatable packing standard for the team.

Start with the carton and the journey it has to survive.
Tape is a small part of a dispatch pack, but a poor match can show up as lifting flaps, rework at the packing bench or a carton that opens in transit. Start with the carton condition, weight and closure style, then account for storage temperature, travel distance and whether people or equipment apply the tape.
Acrylic tape
For routine carton sealing, a clear acrylic tape in a suitable gauge is a practical choice. Match it to sound cartons, a consistent closure and the normal demands of warehouse or dispatch work.
Hybrid adhesive tape
Where recycled corrugate, difficult surfaces, temperature exposure or export and longer-haul storage are part of the brief, use a tape specifically described for those conditions and run a site trial.
Hand application
Use a compatible dispenser, apply consistent pressure and agree on a repeatable closure pattern before placing a production order.
The rule of thumb
Micron is one useful input. It is not a complete seal specification.
Film gauge, adhesive, carton surface and application method all affect the result. A thicker film can be relevant when comparing everyday formats, but it does not automatically solve poorly formed cartons, dusty surfaces, overfilled packs or an unsuitable closure pattern.
Use a real packed carton to validate tape performance. Check the seal after application, after normal handling and after exposure to the temperature and storage conditions your cartons actually experience.
Step 1 · Read the carton
Check the board, flap fit and product weight before comparing tape rolls.
Carton tape works as part of the whole pack. A clean, dry carton with well-aligned flaps gives the adhesive a better opportunity to form a consistent seal. Recycled corrugated board, damaged edges, dust, moisture or overfilled cartons can change the result, even when the tape specification has not changed.
Record the carton sizes your team seals most often, the heaviest normal packed weight, the closure style and whether a carton is handled manually, conveyed or stacked. This turns tape selection into a repeatable buying brief instead of an after-the-fact response to seal failures.
- Check that major and minor flaps meet cleanly without excess spring-back.
- Remove loose dust and moisture where practical before sealing.
- Keep a consistent tape application pattern across the packing team.
- Test the finished carton through its real warehouse and freight path.
Step 2 · Match the adhesive family
Use the product description to guide the first shortlist, then trial on your own carton.
Adhesive naming is not a substitute for a test. It is a useful way to narrow the field. The live Pacific Packaging range includes acrylic formats for general warehouse and dispatch sealing, plus a hybrid adhesive product described for recycled cardboard, corrugated boxes, plastic materials and temperature-sensitive applications.
Acrylic-based adhesive
Build a consistent everyday sealing process.
Acrylic tape is available in clear 45 and 50 micron 48 mm × 75 m formats for regular carton sealing. These products use a 3 inch paper core and are described as suitable for standard dispensers and packing guns. Clear tape can also help retain visibility of labels, barcodes and carton print.
Choose the gauge that aligns with everyday needs, but assess the tape alongside the carton and closure method rather than treating film thickness as a stand-alone performance guarantee.
Hybrid acrylic adhesive
Escalate the selection when the application is less routine.
Pacific Packaging's 48 micron hybrid adhesive packaging tape is described as BOPP film with hybrid acrylic adhesive. Its product information identifies recycled cardboard, corrugated boxes, plastic materials, temperature exposure, export, shipping and storage as relevant considerations.
That makes it a sensible candidate for a controlled test where cartons are difficult to seal or conditions are more demanding. Confirm the result in the actual pack, do not infer it from a product name alone.

A reliable hand-sealing process gives tape selection a fair test.
Use a compatible dispenser.
A suitable dispenser can help the team apply tape cleanly and consistently at the packing bench.
Apply pressure and a repeatable pattern.
Centre the tape on aligned flaps, apply adequate pressure and avoid changing the closure method carton by carton.
Trial one variable at a time.
When changing tape, carton board or the closure pattern, test representative packed cartons and record the outcome.
A five-point trial
Validate the full closure, not just the first pull from the roll.
- Prepare: use the carton size, board grade and product weight normally shipped.
- Apply: seal with the intended hand dispenser and standard closure pattern.
- Handle: move the carton through ordinary pick, pack, staging and palletising steps.
- Hold: check the seal after the storage temperature and dwell time that matter to your operation.
- Review: document lifting flaps, adhesive transfer, inconsistent placement or carton failure before choosing the bulk format.
Frequently asked questions
Questions worth resolving before your next tape order.
Is a higher micron tape always right for a heavier carton?
No. Film gauge is relevant, but carton board, product weight, adhesive, flap alignment, storage conditions and application method all affect the seal. Trial a complete packed carton rather than selecting on micron alone.
What is the difference between acrylic and hybrid adhesive packaging tape?
Acrylic is a common adhesive family for routine carton sealing. The Pacific Packaging hybrid product uses a hybrid acrylic adhesive and is described for recycled board, temperature-sensitive applications, export, shipping and storage. Use the product description as a shortlist, then verify on actual cartons.
Why does tape lift from recycled cartons?
Recycled board can vary in surface finish and may also be affected by dust, storage conditions, carton damage or poor flap alignment. Inspect the carton first, then test an appropriate tape and closure method on representative packs.
Does carton tape provide transport restraint for a pallet?
No. Carton sealing tape closes cartons. Any palletised load must be assessed separately for its unitising, protection and transport-restraint requirements.
