A battery-powered combination tool can tension, friction weld and cut plastic strapping in one portable process. The useful buying decision starts by matching the tool to the strapping already used, or the strap selected for the load. Width and thickness must fit the tool's stated range, the tension range must suit the pack, and the operating mode must suit the people and throughput at the station.
Confirm material, width and thickness.
PP and PET strapping behave differently, and every tool has a defined strap window. A nominally compatible material is not enough if its width or thickness falls outside that window.
Set a controlled tension for the pack.
More force is not automatically better. The setting must secure the bundle without crushing cartons, damaging edges or exceeding the strap, tool or packaging-system limits.
Account for cycles, charging and handover.
Battery quantity, charge time, shift pattern, wear parts, cleaning and operator training all affect whether a cordless tool improves the real packing workflow.
The safety distinction
Tool tension is a process setting, not a load rating.
A tool's maximum tension does not tell you that a load is safely restrained, and it is not permission to apply that force to every pack.
The complete system includes the strap specification, joint efficiency, number and position of straps, edge protection, product strength, pallet condition and the applicable transport-restraint plan. Strapping can unitise a load, but it does not replace the restraint system required for transport.
Step 1 · Match the consumable
Start with PP versus PET, then narrow by exact dimensions.
Polypropylene strapping is commonly selected for lighter bundling and carton or parcel applications where its handling and economy suit the task. Polyester strapping is commonly used where higher retained tension and a stronger plastic strap are required for palletised or rigid loads.
Those are selection starting points, not universal rules. Review the strap manufacturer's specification and the packed load, then confirm that its width and thickness sit inside the tool's compatibility range. - Record the strap material, width and thickness currently in use.

Step 3 · Design the packing process
The right tool still needs an approved routine.
Create a job-specific setting.
Use the controlled pack trial to establish tension and weld settings. Record the strap, product, edge protection and approved tool mode so the job can be repeated consistently.
Teach loading, alignment and inspection.
Operators need to understand how to position overlapping strap, seat the tool, keep hands clear, wait for the weld cycle and identify an incomplete or overheated joint.
Protect the contact surfaces.
Follow the product manual for cleaning, wear-part inspection, battery charging and storage. Strap dust and damaged feed or weld components can undermine consistency.
Battery and ergonomics
Assess the whole shift, not one demonstration cycle.
A cordless tool removes the need to bring the load to a fixed sealer or manage an air line around the station. The gain is most useful when the operator can reach every strap position safely and the battery plan supports the shift.

Measure the process before and after the tool arrives.
A purchase price comparison is incomplete if it ignores consumables, operator time, batteries, scheduled cleaning, wear components, repairs and production interruptions. Record the present method before trialling a battery tool, including the typical number of straps per pack, time per completed pack, rework, joint failures and physical handling points.
Run the trial across a representative mix of work rather than the easiest pallet in the warehouse. Include light cartons, rigid loads, different strap paths and the shift conditions the tool will actually face. The purpose is not simply to prove that the tool can form a joint, it is to establish a repeatable setting and a practical operating routine.
A useful commissioning record links the tool setting to a defined strap and pack.
- Record the strap brand or specification, material, width and thickness.
- Document the approved tension, weld and cooling settings.
- Photograph the correct strap overlap, tool position and finished joint.
- Define the inspection response for a weak, misaligned or overheated weld.
- Set battery rotation, charging, cleaning and storage responsibilities.
- Review the pack after lifting, internal movement and normal handling.
When to keep a manual option
Automation should suit the volume and risk, not replace judgement.
A combined battery tool can be valuable for repeated plastic-strapping work, but a manual tensioner and sealer may remain practical for occasional jobs, unusual access points or a controlled backup process. The right mix depends on volume, pack consistency, tool access, maintenance support and how quickly a failed station would affect dispatch.
If one battery tool will become a single point of failure, decide in advance how work continues during charging, servicing or repair. That may mean a second battery, a second compatible tool, or a documented manual fallback with the correct tensioner, sealer and seals for the strap.

Questions to resolve before selecting a model.
Can one battery tool run both PP and PET strapping?
Yes, where the product specification explicitly supports both materials and the exact strap width and thickness are within range. Recheck the approved tension and welding settings whenever the strap specification changes.
Does friction welding remove the need for metal seals?
These combination tools form a friction-welded joint and cut the plastic strap, so their intended process does not use a separate metal seal. The joint still needs to be produced and inspected in line with the tool and strap instructions.
Should I choose the tool with the highest tension figure?
No. Choose a tool whose adjustable range suits the approved pack and strap. Maximum tension is only one boundary of the operating window, not a measure of overall suitability or transport restraint.
How do I know if the weld is acceptable?
Follow the tool and strap manufacturer's inspection criteria. During setup, validate the joint with the actual consumable and pack, then train operators to recognise misalignment, incomplete welding, excessive melting or premature release.
When does a battery tool make more sense than manual tools?
It can be a practical fit where repeated tensioning and sealing, movement between loads, or the need for more consistent settings justifies a combined cordless process. Throughput, ergonomics, maintenance support and the existing strap system should all form part of the decision.
